The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson admitted for the first time that attended a party held at Downing Street during lockdown on May 20, 2020.
He began his appearance at today's session of the House of Commons apologizing for the incident. As he stated, he is aware of «the sacrifices and anxieties» of the citizens, and he is also aware of the «anger» they feel towards him and his government because they feel that the rules were broken at Downing Street by those who make the rules.
«I know there were things we simply didn't do right, and I have to take responsibility for that.», said the British Prime Minister, adding that he went to the Downing Street garden around 6 p.m. on May 20 to thank the staff for their hard work and returned to his office 25 minutes later.
As he said, he considered it to be a professional event, despite the fact that the invitation from his private secretary referred to a social event with drinks.
He admitted that, afterwards realizes that he should have asked everyone to leave the garden. Although, as he noted, the event was «technically within the rules,» millions of citizens disagree.
He concluded his statement by repeating his «heartfelt apologies» to the public and asking that the investigation into the events of that day and other allegations of parties be allowed to be completed.
Responding, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, said that «after months of deception and misdirection,» a «pathetic Prime Minister has been forced to come clean.".
«His excuse that he didn't realize he was at a party is so ridiculous that it is offensive to the British public.», said Mr. Starmer, calling on Boris Johnson «to do the decent thing and resign.».
