Donald Trump announced a five-day postponement of attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure, saying that there have been «very good and productive discussions» with the Iranian side. In fact, he noted that these discussions are aimed at a «complete and total» solution to the issue of hostilities in the Middle East.
«I am pleased to convey that the United States and the State of Iran have had, over the past two days, very good and productive discussions on a full and comprehensive solution to the issue of our hostilities in the Middle East. Based on the general direction and tone of these in-depth, detailed and constructive discussions, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the War Department to defer any military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a period of five days, contingent upon the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President Donald J. Trump,’ the US President announced on Truth Social.
The US President's announcement comes just hours before the 48-hour ultimatum he had given Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz expired. The closure of the Straits has caused global disruption to the supply of oil and gas from the Persian Gulf countries and concerns about a new economic crisis.
Iran has threatened that if its energy infrastructure is attacked or military intervention is attempted on part of its territory, it will retaliate, including by mines in the Persian Gulf.
