Stupidity: A Disease or a Natural Condition in Some People?;

By Stavros Megalokonomos

We are living in an era of major «changes,» of the redefinition of values, the subversion of language, and the complete imposition of lawlessness and impunity for crooks and fools of every kind.

The general public may look down on fools, but the state and science do not. Of all the sciences, only medicine and law have dealt with them so far. Medicine has determined the causes, types, and degrees of their mental impairment. Law (and the state) has determined the degree to which they can be held accountable for their actions.

According to Anatole France, «Fools are not only essential to the proper functioning of the social machine, but they also direct, sustain, and perpetuate it. They are the masters of life; they are the restraining force that keeps the world from going off the rails. They are the agents of history and the only hope that social life will proceed smoothly and «sensibly,» without sudden leaps or jolts. »Without the serious contribution of fools, there is no society.”.

And why are fools better equipped in the struggle for dominance? Because they have great biological abilities.

A. They have an innate tendency to form cliques. They all work together, back-to-back, to attain the highest social positions, banding together in powerful cliques. In unity lies strength. (A morning visit to Potamos Square will fully confirm this.).

B. They have more and safer means at their disposal in the struggle: flattery, lies, slander, fraud, intrigue, bribery, «playing the fool,» kissing hands, etc.—and with these tactics, which an intelligent person cannot use (because they are also dignified), they prevail.

Idiots are the real «intelligent» people, and the so-called «intelligent» people are the real idiots. What does «intelligent» mean? One who is well-equipped. One who, by nature, is well-suited for a task. And in society—which is a jungle where the strong devour the weak—the intelligent are the devourers, and the fools are the devoured.

Many idiots have successively taken over most of the positions in society and the state, from the president of the republic to the president of the «Association of Nearby Flies,» the «secretary-general of the General Confederation of Mouse-Trap Sellers,» and so on—positions that, of course, no serious, hardworking person would ever seek.

Reading all of this in the studies that various sociologists have conducted from time to time in the past and considering the current state of society, both at the national level and at the local community level, one can see that their claims are fully substantiated.

Kythira 2026: As you drive from Potamos toward Chora and pass through Dokana, you’ll see a sign that reads «WELCOME TO KYTHIRA, KEEP THE ISLAND CLEAN.» Immediately, any reasonable person would think that, aside from hiking, religious, and general tourism, we also have visitors who will either arrive by parachute or be dropped off on the island by a drone! How else can the presence of such a sign at this location be explained?!

Trash cans in the parking lot at Potamos. The best way to complement the aforementioned signs. So we can tell visitors, «Welcome, get a first taste.» If we also take into account the clogged drains and sewage leaks in this area, then we’ve really gone all out in welcoming tourists.

It’s Christmas in Potamos, Kythira, and the area is filled with Christmas songs in foreign languages—apparently due to a lack of Greek-language ones. «Little houses» have been set up (in an architectural style of unknown origin, unless our experts can enlighten us on this) in an effort to preserve the island’s time-honored traditions.

A central square haphazardly cluttered with tables and chairs belonging to various business owners, who act with complete impunity. And one wonders: If all the stores on the main street that crosses the River, from the City Hall to the bakery, were restaurants, then obviously, to fit all those tables and chairs, the square would have to be built two or three stories high! Very original and pioneering. Hurry up, or the next ones will steal your glory. The opposition—both major and minor—is lying in wait.

The Sunday market in Potamos (yes, the one that Mr. Charchalakis tried—and is still trying—to abolish), the one the municipal government wanted to «bring under control.» After installing a water supply system to clean up the area after the market, it proceeded to «regularize» the vendors and bring the products for sale into compliance with current regulations (!). Where is he supposed to find the time to address the traffic chaos that occurs from Meltemi and beyond in the direction of Karava? It’s so, so difficult to make a street one-way!

Agia Pelagia. It accounts for 35% out of a total of 40% existing hotel beds on Kythira. And instead of prioritizing the construction of a sewer system and the creation of a wastewater treatment plant, plans were set in motion to build a sewer system stretching many, many kilometers to carry wastewater from all settlements to the wastewater treatment plant in Kapsali.

A group in Agia Pelagia, operating «on its own initiative,» had the brilliant idea to suggest tearing down the unused pergolas so that children could play! In other words, children can’t play under the pergolas. They have to be out in the blazing sun to enjoy themselves!

The ringleader? The only one who isn't entitled to a chardaka—and yet he has one!

River Drainage Project. It has not been completed in forty years.

«Ta Sanidia» Theater in Agios Giannis. Closed (The truth is that this ability to close venues is a trait of the elected monarch).

The usurer, the loan shark, the bear, the bear tamer, the so-called «distinguished Kythirians» (from Athens), Rasputin, and so many others are oppressing us, while proclaiming that they want to protect us!

Just a few more of the many remarkable things happening in Kythira.

The masters of life, the restraining force that keeps the world from going off the rails. The agents of history and the only hope that social life will proceed smoothly and «sensibly,» without sudden leaps or jolts. »Without the significant contribution of fools, there is no society.”.
