The Kythira and Antikythira Local Property Commission announces that last week, a series of visits took place – and meetings with high-ranking officials from the Ministry of the Environment and the Forest Service in the Gerakario Forest, which were arranged at the initiative of the Mayor, in order to identify and treat the disease (orthotomicus and pityogenes) affecting the forest’s pine trees and to explore ways to save the healthy trees. The problem is complex and difficult to address. Every possible effort is being made to address it, always in cooperation with the relevant authorities, and we hope to achieve positive results in order to save the remaining healthy trees, since the disease is contagious! We would also like to add that dead trees serve as additional fuel, which increases the risk to the forest in the event of a fire.
