tapinella panuoides (Fr.) E.-GilbertSyn. Paxillus panoides (Fr, , Paxillus fagi Berk.&Broome, Paxillus panuoides var.fagi (Cooke, Crepidotus panuoides (Pilat
An impressive mushroom that grows on dead coniferous wood, forming overlapping layers with its fruiting body at several levels.
It was first described in 1818 by the Swedish mycologist Elias Magnus Fries who gave it the name Agaricus panuoides and was transferred to the genus Tapinella in 1931 by the French mycologist Eduard-Jean Gilbert (1888-1954)
According to the taxonomic system of the British Mycological Society ( and Kew Gardens Botanic Garden / IndexFungorum), the genus Tapinella is placed in the family Tapinellaceae.
The name of the genus comes from the Greek word tapis while the characteristic adjective of the genus comes from the Latin panus, which in turn comes from the Greek panos or panos = lump, tumor. .
Modern research indicates that the mushroom contains compounds that may have antioxidant, neuroprotective and other therapeutic properties ( Yun et al., 2000) (Lee et al., 2003)
In Kythera I often find it on cut pine trunks in the damaged forests of the island.
