The implementation of educational infrastructure for housing Merchant Navy Academy of Masters, Engineers and Lifesavers in the Community of Neapolis, in a building to be provided by the municipality of Monemvasia, claims, in a letter to the Prime Minister and the competent ministers, the Mayor of Monemvasia, Hercules Trichilis.

As the Mayor of the Municipality of Monemvasia, I would like to inform you of the strong interest of our Municipality in the establishment of a Merchant Marine Academy for Captains, Engineers and Lifesavers in the Community of Neapolis, which is a long-standing request of the Vatika region.
For the implementation of the educational infrastructure, our Municipality will immediately provide for its housing, an existing building of 1.625,97 sqm of adequate, suitable and functional area on the beach of Neapolis, as well as assist in anything further required (attached printed and digital material 2,3).
The building is spread over 3 levels with 10 classrooms, an auditorium, an auditorium, an event hall, 2 gym rooms, teachers' rooms, offices, storage rooms, utility rooms, sanitary rooms, etc.
The general population of our Municipality (Monemvasia, Neapolis, Kyparissi, Gerakas, Plytra, Elia, etc.) has been involved in shipping for a long time, as well as the neighbouring Municipalities of Elafonisos and Kythera.
In particular, the population of Vatiki has always been active in the maritime professions, captains, engineers, professional seamen, fishermen, etc. well-established in the naval and merchant navy (cruise ships, tankers, cargo ships, etc.).
Indicatively we mention that the region is one of the first in Greece (perhaps in 2nd place) that has so many officially active and retired seafarers (see table 1).
Our Municipality has allocated a site for the construction of a modern building of the Neapolis Port Authority and the work of the first phase is about to start immediately, and also that due to the suitability of the location, the wider area of Neapolis has been chosen for the installation of a VTMIS system.
The Municipal Port Fund of Monemvasia, based in Neapolis, operates successfully and effectively, managing operational and safety issues (ISPS) of the ports of Monemvasia, Neapolis, Paleokastro, Pounda Elafonisos, etc. as well as assistance-cooperation with the respective port authorities in the management of emergencies, ships, boats, migrants, etc.
Also, in the immediate vicinity is the Museum of Nautical Art and Tradition in a larger building complex that can be annexed in the future if required.
In addition, the Department of Maritime Studies at the Neapolis School of Education is already operating successfully and with increasing participation (see section 4).
Such a choice will have significant benefits for our region, Kythera and Elafonisos, but also for our country in general. It is immediately feasible, the available building is suitable, functional and adequate, given that it has already served 230 students on average over the last 5 years.
We believe that the satisfaction of our request is fair, because there is no similar school in the Peloponnese, besides the State has already invested in large cities, Kalamata, Patras,
Tripoli, Sparta, with structures (University Schools), but also with large infrastructure projects (Ports, Airports, National Road Network, etc.).
We also look forward to the agreement of the Union of Greek Shipowners, since apart from the advantages of our proposal and the good relations, they know our region very well and Mr. P. Laskaridis (honorary citizen of the former Municipality of Voies) contributed to the restoration of the Lighthouse of Kavos Maleas and the late Mr. Konstantinakopoulos (honorary citizen of the former Municipality of Voies) with the study of the restoration of the Lighthouse.
We await your actions and remind you of the Municipality's intention to assist in whatever else is required in order to establish the Academy.
