The news of the death of veteran international forward Stefanos Borbokis has cast a shadow of sadness over the Greek sports world. One of the most talented and «flamboyant» soccer players to come out of Northern Greece passed away at the age of 59.
The deceased passed away today, Holy Saturday, April 11, 2026. He had been fighting a difficult battle recently, as he was facing serious health problems.
His remarkable career
Born on September 26, 1966, and the older brother of the equally renowned international soccer player Vasilis Borbokis, Stefanos left an indelible mark on Greek soccer during the 1980s and 1990s, distinguished for his skill and technical ability.He began his career in PAOK’s youth system, making his debut in the First Division on the final matchday of the 1985–86 season. For many years, he was a key player for the ’Double-Headed Eagle of the North,’ where he spent the majority of his soccer career:
- PAOK: He played for 8 years, recording 214 entries and succeeding 32 goals. His most productive season was 1987–88, when he scored 9 goals in 26 matches.
- Edessaikos: In the summer of 1994, he left PAOK to continue his career with the Edessa team.
- Hercules: He moved to «Gireos,» where he made 60 appearances and scored 10 goals.
- This was followed by the 1997–98 season in the Mars, and he ended his career playing for Apollon Kalamaria.
Overall in the Greek league, Stefanos Borbokis recorded 378 appearances and 62 goals.
His time on the national team
In addition to his club career, the talented forward represented the Greek national team.
