The Iran applied to become a member of the group of the largest emerging economies, known as BRICS, an Iranian official said yesterday, Monday.
Iran's membership in the BRICS group (from the initials of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), «will result in the creation of added value for both sides», according to a spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry.
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated separately that Argentina has applied to join the same group of countries.
Argentine officials did not immediately comment.
Argentine President Alberto Fernández, who is in Europe, has in recent days referred to his country's desire to join the BRICS group.
«While the White House was thinking about what else to destroy in the world, Argentina and Iran submitted applications to join the BRICS,» Zaharova wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
Russia has long sought to strengthen its relations with Asia, South America and the Middle East, but has recently intensified its efforts to counter the sanctions imposed by Europe, the US and other countries following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
