«Maria Zakharova described the words of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis before the US Congress as »unthinkable". Mr Mitsotakis then drew a parallel between the heroic exit of the defenders of Mesolonghi and the surrender of Ukrainian fighters at the Mariupol Azofstal factory.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Wednesday:
«Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made a strange choice of historical events. The struggle of the Greeks for their independence 200 years ago was put on the same scale as war crimes committed by the Kiev regime, which has been waging war for eight years against its own citizens in Donbass. It is unbelievable that the heroes who defended Messolonghi in 1825-1826 should be compared to the Nazis of the Azov battalion,» said Maria Zakharova.
He added that «this is yet another attempt by Athens to justify its problematic decision to join the Western anti-Russian front and provide arms to Kiev, which are used for daily strikes against peaceful civilians in Donbas».
Further deterioration in bilateral relations
Regarding recent statements by the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, diplomatic sources say that these statements unfortunately constitute a further aggravation of bilateral relations, an aggravation for which Greece bears no responsibility.
