The title «INHERITURA area» was awarded to Pavlopetri Elafonisos, in the framework of the INHERIT programme and the final conference was held between 27 and 29 April and concerns the joint protection of cultural heritage and the natural environment in Europe, while the first works for the promotion of the archaeological site have already been funded.
On the last day of the conference, the project partners from all over the Mediterranean visited the island, where they were welcomed by the Mayor Mrs.Efi Liarou and the archaeologist Mrs.Despina Koutsouba guided them to the archaeological site of Pavlopetrios Elafonisos and the NATURA 2000 area. This was followed by a press conference on the end of the Programme.
Addressing the guests, Mrs Liarou pointed out that with the cooperation of the Peloponnese Region, the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and the Municipality of Elafonisos, and the funding of the project, the first underwater routes in the sunken prehistoric settlement of Pavlopetriou Elafonisos were implemented, with signage and underwater signs that help all swimmers to navigate the archaeological site. «This is an important achievement of the efforts that the Municipality of Elafonisos has been making for many years for the protection and promotion of the cultural heritage and the natural environment of our place. In this effort we invite all citizens and visitors of Elafonisos to be helpers. It is up to us - concluded Mrs. Liarou - to protect the ancient settlement, the signs and markings placed, the natural environment and to resist any use that may bring any damage or alteration to the area».
In a relevant announcement of the Municipality it is stated that we protect the Pavlopetri Elafonisos means:
