The laying of the Aegina subsea water supply pipeline was successfully completed. The project is funded by the ESPA (PEP Attica 2104-2020) with the amount of 21.5 million €.
It should be noted that water has already been transferred through the pipeline to Aegina on a trial basis, while the works on the renumeration tank continue.
At the same time, the Municipality of Aegina is carrying out the necessary actions at the central reservoir so that the water reaches the taps of the residents of Aegina as soon as possible.

The completion of the relevant procedure was attended by V. Theodorakopoulou-Bogri, Vice-Regional Governor of the Islands and the Mayor of Aegina G. Zorbas. Also present were the Deputy Mayor of Aegina D. Karagiannis, the President of the Community of Aegina P. Kasimakis and the President of the Port Fund and Municipal Councillor of Aegina S. Sterianos.
It is an emblematic project unique in Greece as it connects, via Salamina and from a central pipeline of EYDAP through a 14.4 km underwater pipeline at depths of up to 95 meters, with a daily water supply of 21,500 cubic meters, to an island, Aegina. The pipeline finally solves the important problem of the island's water supply, which until now has been supplied by water tankers. The project, together with a number of important projects and infrastructure funded by the Region, contributes to the development of Aegina.
After the completion of the laying and according to the pace of development, the project is expected to be completed by the end of September and delivered for use by citizens.

Ο Regional Governor of Attica G. Patoulis who a few days ago had supervised the pontooning works off Aegina, said:
«I would like to express my great satisfaction that a flagship and innovative project, after our concerted actions, is in its final phase of implementation, as it is progressing at a very fast pace. We are providing solutions to vital issues of our islands and helping to strengthen their infrastructure. This is a unique project in Greece, the planning of which started about a decade ago. With coordinated initiatives and actions that we undertook from the beginning of our term of office, we managed to unblock it.
It is a pioneering project, perhaps one of the most difficult projects that have been carried out in the country and perhaps the most important in terms of water supply to an island region by submarine pipeline.
The connection of Aegina to EYDAP will improve the quality of life of all residents and reduce the cost of consumption, which is particularly important for vulnerable groups. I would like to thank the Vice-Regional Governor of the Islands V. Theodorakopoulou-Bogris who is following the project step by step and very closely, the Mayor of Aegina G. Zorba, the contractor company that undertook the execution of the project and all those who contributed to make this project a reality».

Mrs B. Theodorakopoulou-Bogris stressed that «I feel very satisfied that after many years, an important project for Aegina is now in the final stretch. Against the weather, the pandemic and the sabotage, we did not stop even one day, with the support of the Attica Region Governor George Patoulis, to work on this project, which is unprecedented for Greece.
The present administration of the Region of Attica, realizing the great importance of the project for the citizens of Aegina from the first days of assuming its duties with the continuous monitoring of the project, managed to solve many problems and thus have the desired result. I am very grateful to the technical services of Piraeus and the Islands for the great zeal they have shown for this project, the man-hours they have dedicated to its supervision, as well as to the contractor for the good cooperation».
