One of the most long-awaited infrastructure projects for the Vatika area is on track for implementation. The construction work of the new Indoor Gymnasium in Neapolis Lakonia is now proceeding at an intensive pace, filling the local community with optimism for its early delivery.
The issue returned dynamically in the news after a post of the Association of Neapolitans «Ta Vatika» on social media. The Association, expressing the common sentiment of the residents, noted that «the construction work of the Neapolis indoor stadium is proceeding at a fast pace», accompanying the statement with the wish «to be completed soon».
The construction of the Indoor Gymnasium is a long-standing request for decades for Neapolis and the wider Municipal Unit of Voies of the Municipality of Monemvasia. The lack of a suitable indoor sports venue made it difficult for young people to exercise, for local sports clubs to operate and for school activities to take place during the winter months.
According to the technical characteristics of the project, the new gym will be able to accommodate:
- Basketball (basketball) games and trainings.
- Volleyball (volleyball) games and training.
- Other sports and cultural events.
The project went through a series of obstacles until it reached its current stage of implementation. Although its necessity had been recognised for years, problems in studies, licensing and especially in securing funding caused significant delays.
The final solution was given with the inclusion of the project in the Public Investment Program (PIP) of the Peloponnese Region, with a total budget of up to EUR 1,7 million. The contract with the contractor was signed last year, putting the project on track for construction.
The completion of the Indoor Gymnasium is expected to radically upgrade the quality of life in Neapolis, offering the youth a modern and safe place for sports. At the same time, it will enable the region to host regional-level sporting events, boosting sports tourism and the local economy.
The local community is now closely following the progress of the works, hoping that there will be no further unexpected delays and that the Vatika «palace» will soon open its doors.
