A volunteer cleanup effort is being organized on Wednesday, August 19, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., in the Diakofto area, with the aim of removal of debris and trash that washed up on the shore following the recent grounding of a tourist boat.
The initiative was publicized through a social media post titled «Diakofti Clean Up!», calling on residents and visitors to volunteer to help clean up the beach area.
The organizers ask those attending to bring the following with them large bags, gloves, and closed-toe shoes, as there are fragments and materials from the vessel scattered throughout the area, many of which require special care during recovery.

At the same time, following consultation with the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection of the Municipality of Kythira, Yiannis Katsanevakis, will be installed bins for bulky items, so that the larger pieces of the wreckage collected by the volunteers can be gathered and removed.
The cleanup effort comes just a few days after the incident in Diakofto, which left a significant amount of debris on the rocky coastline, creating the need for immediate cleanup of the area.
The volunteers have been scheduled to meet on on Wednesday morning in Diakofto, taking the initiative to issue an open call to anyone who can help.

I’ll give a big thumbs-up to the civil protection officer who set up the pollution barriers, as well as for the trash bins, which he’ll personally take out and bring back. I’d also like to give a shout-out to the president, who won’t be filing any lawsuits tomorrow but will be there to take attendance—(keep that in mind).
