CNaVT certification and Dutch courses: The Ultimate Exam Preparation Guide

When you start a Dutch course, the initial goal is usually communication. But quickly, as plans to work or study in the Netherlands and Belgium mature, the need for something more formal “paper” arises. This is where the CNaVT (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) comes into your life.

Many students are confused by acronyms, levels and different exam profiles. Is the CNaVT the same as the NT2? Which level do I need for university and which level do I need to work as a doctor? In this guide, we'll unravel the landscape and explain how the right preparation courses can lead you to success.

What is CNaVT and why is it important?;

The CNaVT is the official accreditation body for Dutch as a foreign language. The exams are organised under the auspices of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium and the certificates are internationally recognised.

Unlike other languages where there is a general diploma for each level (e.g. Lower, Proficiency), the CNaVT is profile-based. This means that the exams are thematic and tailored to the purpose for which you are learning the language. You are not tested in general and vague terms, but on scenarios you will encounter in real life as a student or professional.

This specificity makes the choice of appropriate Dutch courses crucial. Preparation is not only about grammar, but also about becoming familiar with the structure and logic of the specific profile you choose.

CNaVT Profiles: which one suits you?;

Choosing the right profile is the first step towards success. Let's look at the most popular profiles for our adult learners:

1. Maatschappelijk Informeel (INFO) - Level A2

This certificate proves that you can survive in everyday life. It is aimed at people who want to live in the Netherlands and have social contacts, but whose work does not require advanced language skills.

2. Maatschappelijk Formeel (FORM) - Level B1

Ideal for those who want to function autonomously in Dutch society. It is often the level required for jobs in tourism, catering or low-level management positions.

3. Zakelijk Professioneel (PROF) - Level B2

This is where things get serious. This profile is aimed at business executives, office workers and professionals who need to operate in a corporate environment. The exam includes scenarios such as customer service, attending meetings and writing business documents.

4. Educatief Startbekwaam (STRT) - Level B2

This is your “passport” to study. If you intend to enrol in a Dutch-language university or college programme, this is the certificate you need. The exam focuses on academic skills, such as understanding lectures and attending seminars.

5. Educatief Professioneel (EDUP) - Level C1

The highest level. Necessary for teachers who want to teach Dutch, but also for certain demanding jobs.

Special Note for Healthcare Professionals: For doctors, dentists and nurses who want to register on the BIG register, B2+ or C1 level is usually required, and there are often specific exams. Preparation for these professions requires specialised Dutch courses with a focus on medical terminology.

How the Preparation Courses differ

It is a mistake to think that general subjects are enough to pass the exam CNaVT. The philosophy of the exam is practical. You will not be asked to fill in gaps in grammar sentences. You will be asked to listen to an audio extract and answer questions or write a letter of complaint.

At ASSOS, the preparation sections focus on:

  • Mock Tests: Practice on old topics under real time conditions.
  • Strategy: How to manage your time, how to identify key words in texts and how to avoid the “traps” of examiners.
  • Speech production: Emphasis on Speaking and Writing, which are usually the candidates' weakest points.

The Examination Procedure

CNaVT tests are carried out once a year, usually in May. This means that planning is essential. You cannot decide in April that you want to take the exam in May, as registration closes earlier (usually March).

The results come out in the summer (July), so if your goal is to enrol at university in September, you should start your Dutch lessons and preparation earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes, the CNaVT examinations are administered at test centres in Greece and Cyprus. ASSOS can inform you about the nearest test centre and the registration process.

2. What happens if I fail one of the sections of the exam?;

In the CNaVT the sections (Listening, Speaking, Reading Comprehension) are conditionally offset, but in general you must have a satisfactory performance in all parts. If you fail, you will unfortunately have to wait until the next exam period next year, so proper preparation is a one-way street.
