The Honduran government announced yesterday Friday that it will allocate 1.9 billion lempiras (US$78 million) to the public electricity company, a subsidy aimed at freezing prices, not increasing them in the next quarter.
The National Electricity Company (ENEE) planned to raise prices by 11 to 12% from yesterday, which would affect about two million residential and non-residential consumers.
But thanks to the decision taken by President Ciomara Castro, «there will be no increase (in electricity prices) due to the international crisis», especially the war in Ukraine, which is pushing up energy costs, Energy Minister Eric Tejada said in a press release.
ENEE's power plants are mainly fuelled by diesel and other fossil fuels. The decision by the left-wing president's government follows the freeze on petrol and diesel prices at petrol stations announced on 24 June.
