With documents proving the economic suffocation and administrative inefficiency, the faction «Free Kythira» deconstructs the narrative of the Municipal Authority, on the occasion of today's meeting (10/02/2026) of the Municipal Commission.
The party brings to light the real reasons for the «barrage» of extensions, revealing that there are no technical reasons behind the delays, but unpaid bills and complete lack of coordination.
In particular, on the basis of the contractors' documents:
- Redevelopment of Cyprus: The project has been frozen since 29/08/2025, with the contractor requesting a 7-month extension (until 8/6/2026), explicitly citing the «non-payment of the 1st bill».
- Water supply (Petrouni - Potamos): Although the project has been completed at a rate of 95%, the contractor filed a «Special Declaration of Termination of Works» on 08/01/2026, due to the late repayment of the approved 3rd account, leaving the tubs open.
- Redevelopment of Avlaimonas: Delay confirmed 11 months old with the sole responsibility of the lack of coordination, as the DEDDIE (as an «autonomous body») does not respond to the requests of the Municipality for the undergrounding of the networks, so that the redevelopment cannot proceed.
«Free Kythera» speaks of a nightmare reality, where the inability to pay and manage is turning the island into a vast, unfinished construction site. Below is the press release:

and a drink for your grandchild»
Not one, not two, but three project extensions are being introduced for a vote in today's City Commission. This is being dubbed serious administration. After all, admittedly, running a municipality is a very easy task.
The first extension of the day concerns the famous redevelopment of Avlaimonas and is necessary because the DEDDIE did not... answer the phones for 11 months. It's no one's fault, the PPC is an «Autonomous Entity» so if it doesn't want to, it doesn't want to, what can the Municipality do to you? Besides, it says so: «there are no magic solutions».
The second extension of the day is for the small redevelopment in Kypriotianika: due to non-payment of the 1st bill of the project. Okay, these things happen, here St. Pelagia was left as a dumpster because the contractor (who also got a compensation and left) wasn't paid. It's all good because «the inconvenience is temporary, but the projects are permanent».
The third extension of the day is for the water supply project from Petrouni to River. This one has already gotten 2 more extensions. The one that started in midsummer, within 3 months 95% was completed and then for some unknown reason it stopped. We asked the City Council in August for the ditches to be closed with asphalt before the cold weather sets in, and the city government pledged that they would be closed by this past November. And now the contractor is requesting a Stop Work Order due to failure to meet the deadline for timely payment of the approved 3rd Bill. The unknown reason for termination was again that they were not paid. Otherwise, «we speak in deeds».
Perhaps the bona fide Chiragos still hopes that the damaged road network from the sewerage project will be patched by the summer. We are sorry but there is no hope, not when the absolute priority is to get funds out and not to execute and deliver useful, properly constructed projects. And it's not that they don't want to, they just can't. When the goal is not creation but money, work becomes a chore.
But as frustrating as it is for projects of normal duration of 3 months to last 3 years (e.g. the stadiums), we have seen lately that a more nightmarish version of executive incompetence for the citizens is beginning to consolidate: after the exhaustion of the extensions, from the smallest to the largest, the projects are finished and abandoned (water supply of Ag.Pelagia, road Ag.Anastasia, asphalt paving in Kalokourines etc.).
Unfortunately, a mayor, who is both a ballast and a cog in this pathological system, can place an incredible burden on present and future generations to repair the damage caused by poorly constructed, unfinished or abandoned projects. All he has to do is be an ace at lying, a cynic at promises, a champion of indifference - and get out at the last minute.

P.S.1 Indicative of the distance of these elected officials from the real survival anxieties of citizens is that the Municipal Committee meets during working hours. That is, at times when no employee can participate. The message being sent out - apparently deliberately - is that involvement in public affairs is the privilege of the idle.
P.S.2 Many protesting «All together‘, in the Municipal Committee and this time you will say yes to everything?;
P.S.3 The (aesthetic container) gym in Chora will hopefully remain a joke. Because otherwise imagine, even if the contractor doesn't abandon it in the concrete (our capital city already has a rich history of abandoned grand yuppies in the same neighborhood), how many years our fellow Choraians will park in Manitochori with so many extensions.
P.S.4 Following the mayor in the spirit of the times, we will present a model of a space station project in Kumaros, whose «study is at an advanced stage».
