The season started early this year for Kalymnos, with the first organized arrivals of climbers recorded in early March.
Easter is also a focus of tourist interest, with increased occupancy expected on the island of sponge divers.
«This year, the destination's appeal is enriched with traditions, religious celebrations, and special forms of tourism that take center stage in Kalymnos before and after the summer months. Easter impresses us, wins new friends, and is an excellent reason to vacation on the island in April,» notes Kalymnos Mayor Dimitris Diakomichalis.
On Holy Thursday, the lamentation of the Virgin Mary at Saint Theologos is characteristic.
On Good Friday, a procession of epitaphs takes place on the island, with the 14 epitaphs «stealing the show» in Pothia, the picturesque port of Kalymnos, which is bustling with life in a solemn atmosphere.
On Holy Saturday, the first Resurrection marks the burning of Judas in many parts of the island, while fireworks are set off in the central square, which, together with the bells, shake the whole island. In Kalymnos, Easter is dominated by «mouri,» a traditional recipe with stuffed lamb or goat that is slow-roasted throughout Holy Saturday night in a covered clay pot in a wood-fired oven that has been sealed with bricks and mud.
On Easter Sunday at noon, a traditional feast is held in the central square with local dance groups. In the afternoon, fireworks take over. The slopes surrounding the port are occupied by two teams from all the neighborhoods of Kalymnos, who begin their own «noisy battle» with fireworks. This unique «clash» lasts until late at night and lights up the sky with all colors, offering a unique experience to travelers.
