«The idea we had for the “household basket” will work and will do very well,» assured the Minister of Development and Investment, Adonis Georgiadis, in the Open TV programme «Hour of Greece».
«We have a huge, terrible global inflation and we are building a “shed” so that the weakest can be covered. This shed is the “household basket”. And with the supermarkets and the food industry we have agreed on the list of 50 products, there will be one or two changes after the list is exchanged, because we accept the criticism that exists.
The number will not increase, because if the number increases it will overflow and the agreement cannot be kept, changes will be made,» the minister made clear.
Why supermarkets cannot increase the price of products
«From the day we met with the Supermarket Association, they will control the price that day, so one cannot increase the products now (prices) and each chain will announce the “household basket”. We are debating whether the “basket” will be updated every 7 or 15 days. I personally lean towards 7.
So every week or two, we will have an announcement from the chains that they have these products on offer, which are essential for every household. The battle will be fought to ensure that the increases in these 50 products are small or even zero. It will also be shielded by legislation.».
