A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck 15 kilometres southeast of the Rio Del region of California, an area that was hit by a strong earthquake last month.
According to the US Geological Survey, the focal depth of the earthquake was 27.8 km.
The same area of California, located in Humboldt County, was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on 20 December, which damaged homes and roads and left thousands of people without water and electricity due to infrastructure failures.
The region is known for frequent seismic activity, although the magnitude of 6.4 caused more than the usual amount of disruption.
