The case of the attempted installation wind farm in the area of Leivaditis of Xanthi, explores the documentary short film, “Wind farms: the Xanthi case - The case of Livaditis”, by Iris Katsoulas and Vangelis Laskaris
This particular issue has attracted interest, following the company's application for installation of 14 huge wind turbines 210 metres high in an area of intense ecotourism interest, where one of the largest waterfalls in the Balkans is located.
As the local actors, who are reacting massively and hyper-partisan, say, the opposition does not concern renewable energies and wind farms as a whole, but the specific and all such installations that are attempted to be licensed in protected areas, of particular natural beauty and interest, such as the Leivaditis of Xanthi and the virgin forest of Haidou.
“We are trying to capture the sights, sounds and smells of a unique place and understand why some people are concerned with green development as it is being implemented. How green is she, after all?; Does it really take people, the social majority and the environment into account or does it serve the interests of the few and the financially powerful? ” say the makers of the documentary, which is freely available to the public via Youtube.
The documentary was filmed during the period when the application of a private company for the installation of a wind farm was pending at the Regulatory Authority for Energy, against which the local Municipality of Xanthi and local stakeholders had appealed and the struggle of the local community continues.
The documentary features, among others, university professors, politicians, representatives of local government, ecotourism professionals, members of nature and cultural associations, teachers, local residents. This is a production of the Association “PAS Antikas” and ProvaT.O. Athens.
