Ship Collision at the Port of Souda – Departures Temporarily Suspended

An inspection by a classification society is currently underway to lift the ban

A minor collision between a passenger-car ferry and a cargo ship occurred on the morning of Tuesday, July 21, at the port of Souda; no one was injured.

According to information from the Coast Guard, the passenger-car ferry was scheduled to depart at 10:00 a.m. from Chania, bound for Piraeus.

About ten minutes after it set sail, there was a minor collision with a cargo ship that was in the harbor area.

No injuries to passengers or crew members were reported as a result of the incident. The port authorities, however, imposed a temporary ban on the passenger-car ferry’s departure until the required inspections are completed.

An inspection is being conducted on the ship by the relevant classification society to determine whether any damage has occurred and whether the conditions for safely continuing the voyage are met.

Once the inspection is complete and provided that no problem affecting the ship’s seaworthiness is identified, the lifting of the sailing ban is expected to be considered.
