Contradictor

Field mushroom L. var. squamulosus (Rea) Pilat
Syn. Field mouse (e.g. Fr.)
Agaric, lowland variety, leafy

It grows in cultivated fields or on the edges of olive groves (kontres), hence the name by which it is known in Kythira.
Local mushroom pickers appreciate it greatly and collect large quantities.
The cap is 5 to 12 cm curved, white, with very faint beige scales when it first appears, becoming almost flat with golden brown scales when mature. Its gills are pink at first and turn dark brown. The flesh is white and takes on a slightly pink hue when cut. This mushroom is edible and very tasty, but caution is needed as it resembles other species that are poisonous.
