Chasmathi the Ethiopian

Exotic and proud

Chasmathi the Ethiopian
Chasmanthe aethiopica L., N.E.Brown

The name is a combination of the ancient Greek words χάσκω (to blossom) and άνθος (flower).
The plant, which originates from South Africa and has become acclimatized to the Mediterranean and other parts of the world, multiplies to form beautiful clusters if left undisturbed for several years. It is very drought-resistant. In Kythira, it can be found all over the island, flowering from late December to February. In Karavas, it is called agriogladiola.
