The most serious problems caused by the fires that have been raging since yesterday are in Boeotia and Porto Germeno in Attica. Residents are being urged via 112 alerts to evacuate areas where the flames are approaching, while strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts. A new fire is currently burning in Phocis, while firefighting crews continue to operate in Aegialia, Rethymno, and Argos.
Firefighting forces operating on the fire fronts in Boeotia and Attica have been reinforced
The fires that broke out yesterday in Boeotia are raging, with the fire fronts spreading into Attica, specifically to Porto Germeno. According to the latest update from the Fire Department, firefighting forces have been further reinforced; specifically, 420 firefighters are currently on the scene, along with 20 teams of foot patrols from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 10th EMODE, volunteers, and 120 vehicles. For aerial firefighting, 19 aircraft and 11 helicopters have been deployed, one of which is used for coordination; and, as reported by the Fire Department, pilots are making efforts to draw water from the sea to assist in extinguishing the fires.
The fires in Xironomi and Kalamaki, Boeotia, spread extensively, burning forest areas and causing damage to homes and property. According to the Fire Department, in the wider area around Porto Germeno, there are three separate fire fronts: one within the pine forest in Porto Germeno, another moving toward Agia Paraskevi, and the third toward Mytika. In Boeotia, firefighting forces are focusing their efforts on two locations: one north of Domvrena and the other toward Livadostra. For this reason, an evacuation alert was issued earlier for the village of Livadostra. Additionally, at noon, a new 112 alert was sent to those in the areas of Agia Paraskevi, Kryo Pigadi, and Agios Nektarios in Attica, instructing them to evacuate due to the ongoing fire. Specifically, the message states: ‘Forest fire in your area. If you are in the areas of Agia Paraskevi, Kryo Pigadi, and Agios Nektarios in the Attica Region, evacuate toward Vilia. Follow the instructions of the authorities.’.
Water tankers and construction equipment provided by the Region of Attica and Central Greece are also assisting in the effort.
The «DEYKALION» team is also assisting with firefighting efforts. In addition, construction equipment has been provided by the Directorate of Construction and Natural Disaster Response to clear firebreaks in cooperation with the Forest Service. Units from the Hellenic Police and the National Ambulance Service (EKAV) are deployed throughout the area. Meanwhile, the Fire Department notes that in the area, which is currently at extreme fire risk—alert status (category 5)— gale-force winds are blowing.
