In an article in the Turkish newspaper «Nefes,» journalist Deniz Zeyrek analyzes the reasons why Turks are flocking to the Greek islands for their vacations. As the columnist points out, this trend is mainly due to lower prices for lodging and food, tax incentives, and the express visa process offered by Greece, as well as Turkey’s high inflation, which makes Turkish resorts unaffordable. At the same time, he emphasizes the importance of the positive and welcoming atmosphere on the Greek islands, in contrast to the daily tension that prevails in his own country.
In his article titled «Why Are Turks Flocking to the Greek Islands?», Zeirek highlights the striking increase in tourist traffic from Turkey to Greece. As he notes, in 2025, more than 1.5 million Turks made a total of 2.6 million visits to the Greek islands, spending more than 500 million euros, while estimates indicate a further increase of 25%–30% for 2026.
The columnist explains that Greece’s success is no accident, but the result of strategic planning that began after the 2009 economic crisis. The Greek government supported tourism by reducing the VAT rate on food and lodging to 13%, while also implementing additional VAT discounts on remote islands such as Lesbos, Chios, Samos, and Kos. The introduction of the express visa in 2024 transformed Turkey’s coastal cities into a direct source of visitors. At the same time, the low cost and short duration of ferry trips give travelers the impression of simply crossing over to the opposite shore. Strict price controls, the absence of fees for parking or beach access, and affordable car rentals reinforce the image of a high-quality yet economical experience, the Turkish columnist emphasizes.
On the other hand, he notes, Turkey’s tourism market is burdened by high food inflation, rising operating costs, and exchange rate fluctuations, which often cause domestic prices denominated in foreign currency to exceed those abroad. Comparing a three-day trip to Samos with a stay at a comparable hotel in Marmaris, Zeirek finds that the total cost in Greece was nearly half, while offering higher quality.
In conclusion, the columnist points out that, beyond the economic aspect, the psychological climate also plays a decisive role. In contrast to the daily tension, political conflicts, and negative energy that prevail in Turkey, the Greek islands offer visitors an atmosphere of tranquility, kindness, and joy, making a vacation there a truly rejuvenating experience.
