According to the latest census, the one of 2021, Tilos has less than a thousand inhabitants, with the exact number standing at 899. Yet it manages to stay high in the news and always for good reason.
It is not only that it teaches solidarity and humanism with its stance on migration. It also sees its efforts to become a model «green island» rewarded and recognised internationally.
The island won two first prizes at the European Entrepreneurship Promotion Awards, held in Budapest, thanks to the innovative «Just Go Zero Tilos» project, which won the first prize, beating rivals from Austria and the Netherlands, which made the final three out of 400 nominations.

What are the European Entrepreneurship Promotion Awards
The European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA) is an institution that recognises and rewards initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and SMEs at national, regional and local level. Since 2006, more than 4,400 projects have entered the awards, supporting the creation of over 11,000 new businesses.

The prizes are awarded in six categories:
-Promoting entrepreneurship: Recognises initiatives that encourage an entrepreneurial mindset, especially among young people and women.
-Investing in business skills: Rewards actions that improve business, management and labour skills.
-Supporting digital transformation: Recognises initiatives that help businesses develop, market and use digital technologies, products and services.
-Improving the business environment and supporting the internationalisation of enterprises:
It rewards innovative policies and initiatives that make Europe an attractive place to start, run and grow a business by simplifying legislative and administrative procedures.
-Supporting sustainable transition: Recognises actions that promote sustainable development, such as the circular economy, climate neutrality, clean energy, resource efficiency or biodiversity.
-Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship: It rewards initiatives that promote corporate social responsibility among SMEs and entrepreneurship among vulnerable groups such as the unemployed, legal migrants, people with disabilities or ethnic minorities.
In addition, the Grand Jury Prize is awarded to the most creative and inspiring initiative from all categories.
