Rescuers and volunteers continue to search for survivors in the rubble, racing against time, following the strongest earthquake to hit Colombia in the last decade, with the latest—still preliminary—casualty toll reporting 132 dead, 570 injured, and dozens of buildings that have suffered severe damage or been completely destroyed.
«The death toll now stands at 132 (…) and we have counted more than 570 injured,» Asocapitales, an organization founded by Colombia’s major cities to coordinate their efforts on various issues, said in a statement.
The previous official toll, announced by the country’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriegia, reported 111 dead and 87 injured last night, following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Chocó, a poor department on Colombia’s Pacific coast, earlier that morning.
