U.S. President Donald Trump said yesterday, Sunday, that he was «very happy» about the recent signing of a defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, three countries considered allies of Washington, signed a defense agreement on August 7, against the backdrop of attacks against the Sunni kingdom and the war in the Middle East.
The agreement «shows that the Middle East is uniting and that these countries will finally be able to defend themselves more effectively,», commented The U.S. president, via Truth Social, expressed his «congratulations.».
Saudi Arabia, where the agreement was signed, wants to strengthen its security alliances after becoming the target of Iranian retaliatory attacks in response to U.S. airstrikes. At the same time, Riyadh has been confronted with a resurgence of hostilities in Yemen, where it supports the internationally recognized government in its conflict with Ansar Allah, a Shiite movement also known by the surname of its leaders, the Houthis, which is aligned with Tehran.
Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia also share a common stance in supporting mediation efforts to end the war between the U.S. and Iran.
Analysts see the agreement as a way for the signatory countries to distance themselves from the U.S., which is increasingly viewed as an unreliable ally in the region, and is unable to stop all unmanned aerial systems and ballistic missiles launched by Iran and its allies in the region against the Gulf monarchies.
