I read today in the attached article the case of Agios Stratis (there was also an article in NEA the other day)

Ai Stratis is of course a different case from Kythera. For example, it is not interconnected and there can be no discussion, at least at the moment, about energy production beyond its needs. Which are much lower than Kythera.

But what is important in the whole story is:

Α. The involvement and assistance to the island by the Centre for Renewable Sources and Energy Saving (KEPA) which is the national body for the promotion of Renewable Sources, Rational Use and Energy Saving. The question is if they helped in Agios Stratis, do we need to «push» it to be interested in Kythera as well ?

Β. The balanced form of the project. A 900 KW wind turbine, combined with a 225 KW photovoltaic park and a 2.68 MWh energy storage system

The important thing here is not what was chosen (obviously it is what is needed for this island), nor the fact that the project is being implemented by a private company. The important thing is that it appears that there is help and expertise available to plan properly, always under the control of the Kytherian community through our institutions and our participation.

For example, such a project, appropriately designed for Kythera, could be designed by KEPA (including the potential of Kythera, e.g. possibly other forms of energy such as biomass or wave energy etc.) and implemented by a Kythera Energy Community.

I hope, following the recent online discussion, that the decisions of the February 2020 City Council will be implemented in their entirety (and where necessary reinforced with appropriate budget provisions or by seeking additional funding).

As I have said before, I believe that the best way to deal with pharaonic plans for energy investments on our island is to formulate and implement our own energy plan. And to do it in such a way and in such a measure that the «domestic» production is in perfect harmony with the nature and environment of our island, and to help the overall development of Kythera and improve the lives of its inhabitants.
