An earthquake occurred a few minutes ago, today Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 23:52 (Greek time), with an epicentre in a sea area 21.4 km northeast of Kythera. According to the automatic solution of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1 Richter.
The focal depth is estimated at just under 2 km, which makes it quite superficial. Although the intensity of the tremor was small, the shallow focal depth may explain why it was felt in some parts of the island.
The residents of Kythera are used to small earthquakes, as the area is located on known seismotectonic faults.
Reminder: what to do in case of an earthquake
Experts remind people to stay calm and follow basic protection measures, such as:
- Stay in open spaces away from buildings, trees and power lines.
- Avoiding the use of lifts.
- Indoors, shelter under a sturdy table or in a wall corner.
The Geodynamic Institute continues to monitor the seismic activity in the area and will inform about any developments.
