Kythera, 10 September 2024. The start of the new school year in Kythera is accompanied by a serious issue that affects students and parents: the lack of school transport. Despite expectations that everything would be ready for the new year, contracts for the renewal of the routes have not yet been signed, leaving students without the necessary means of transport to school.
The Chora-Karvounades Primary School of Kythera informed parents in a letter that due to delays by the Region of Attica, the contracts for the school routes, which should have been signed by the beginning of September, have not yet been completed. As a result, students will not have access to transportation to get to their schools, which is a serious problem for many families who depend on these services.
The transport problem
Kythera, an island with limited transport options, relies heavily on school transport to ensure that students can get to their schools. The lack of services creates significant inconvenience, especially for families living in remote areas of the island. Without the provision of transport services, many parents are forced to cover the daily mileage, putting additional pressure on both their time and their financial budget.
This delay on the part of the Region is particularly worrying, as the issue of school transport is a persistent problem in many areas of Greece, but in Kythera, with its geographical isolation, this lack of transport has an even greater impact.
Parents' reactions
The situation has provoked strong reactions from parents, who wonder why the transport issue was not resolved in time. «This is not the first time this has happened but each time we hope things will be different,» a parent told Kythera.News. «Those in charge should take responsibility and solve this problem immediately.».
Although parents are trying to adapt to the situation, they are worried about how long this uncertainty will last and whether there will be a permanent solution.
The solution of this problem is urgent and necessary for the smooth operation of the school year in Kythera.
