Kythera is an island with large forested areas. Several areas are particularly rugged, while the countryside has been largely abandoned in the last fifty years. The result of abandonment is the prevalence of low vegetation on the once clean arable land, which is conducive to the spread of fires. Fires have often been started in winter after clearing farmland, particularly when strong winds blow, which helps them to spread.
On 25 February 2023, late in the evening, a fire occurred west of the settlement of Drymonas, at the location Xeroulaki. Firefighting forces were immediately on the spot and fought to extinguish the fire. In this feature you can see photos of the incident and unedited footage in the video we publish.
The mission includes the firefighters of the Kythera fire brigade, as well as the volunteer firefighters who assist the brigade in any emergency. This article is dedicated to those who are present at every incident, every time, all months of the year and protect our island from major disasters.
