How necessity becomes history, how history becomes silence...

Article by Athena Laopodi

The interview given by Alice Weidel, president of the nationalist Alternative for Germany party, which is gaining ground in the opinion polls, to Ilon Musk was described by many journalists as childish, unsuccessful and unconfrontational. But is this the case?;

The audience of Weidel and all right-wing politicians, inside and outside Europe, is certainly not journalists, nor are they history buffs or deep-thinking citizens. The loud ears of the far right - something that Weidel and her like-minded colleagues, even within the borders, are well aware of - are people who are tired, those who are impoverished or those who are afraid of losing their gains as they see the world changing around them. These people, rightly or wrongly, feel that their security is threatened. It is in them that the history that «does not fit us» and which, according to the far-right narrative, must be written off, forgotten and rewritten at will, finds fertile ground.

A typical example is Weidel's famous quote that Hitler was a... communist. To us it may sound miserable and grotesque, but think for a moment how it sounds to an average person who has experienced the «good» of social democratic governments for years? With a Left that either has nothing to say to him, or looks down on him, or simply hasn't learned his language, a simple leap of logic that adds the word ’ethnic« next to the word »socialism«, which after all was deliberately used to influence the popular strata from the start, becomes easy to believe.

The far-right has for years been attempting with great success to change the narrative and to disconnect, at least superficially, from its conscious connection with Nazism. Already, a 2004 paper by the eminent political scientists Betz and Jonshon points out that far-right formations in Europe are adapting their strategies to avoid direct association with Nazism's past and to distance themselves from more extreme images.

Numerous studies show that the far right chooses themes that target the vital needs of man, pointing as the main culprits for his misery not to his political opponents or the haves and have-nots, but to immigrants, minorities and anything else that is presented as threatening to peaceful life.

And all of this is happening in an environment of asthmatic and morbid capitalism, which is already devouring more and more people. The sword of war hangs over our heads, the cries for decent living and justice are heard everywhere, while the Left remains unable to provide solutions. Instead of speaking popularly and acting, it continues to philosophise and admonish. Against this backdrop, the far right exploits the need, disenchantment and ignorance of the people, as well as their fears.

It is no coincidence that a few years ago, Babis Papadimitriou from SKAI spoke about the need for a «serious» Golden Dawn. You call it a clogged letter...

At the same time, however, the business continues. A quick search on the internet, apart from pogroms against immigrants, racist statements and conspiracies, will reveal that the European far right is rife with scandals involving its «friends». From the Panama Papers to the Berlusconi scandal, from Salvini in Italy and the scandal of the pro-Franco Fundación Franco in Spain, to the financing of the National Front in France and the AfD in Germany by industrialists and businessmen, all this demonstrates the obvious: the far right is nothing more than a tool for appeasing the masses and concentrating even more wealth in the hands of the few. Besides, the far right now has its own platform on social media, provided by almost the richest man in the world.

The far right in Europe is not just a random reaction of the popular masses, but an organised attempt to redesign its historical image, adapted to respond to the needs and fears of contemporary societies. From recasting its political rhetoric to distancing itself from Nazism, the far right effectively uses social concerns to advance its agenda. This historical readjustment, this targeted revisionism is not accidental, but reflects a strategic political move. The expression «socialism» in the name of National Socialism, although incompatible with Hitler's historical reality, is now being used by the far right as a weapon against socialism. It is a tactic that exploits a lack of political education and an emotional fear of difference.

The far right has managed to transform itself from a movement exclusively linked to Nazi violence into a movement that embodies delaying and electorally motivated patriotic and nationalist ideals, reinforcing fears around immigration and economic insecurity. From AfD in Germany to the National Front in France, this adaptive far-right uses scandals and funding to create a new «serious» façade, reaching a wider audience.

In the context of a decaying capitalism and social inequalities, the far right remains a weapon for maintaining the status quo, offering a fictitious sense of security to citizens. The key to the future lies in our ability to recognise the need for action, to stop the silencing of history and to resist the distortion of the truth. As the great Alcios Alcaeus writes, «that need becomes history... that history becomes silence». The future of our society depends on our decision not to allow history to become silence.
