The severe weather system “BYRON” continues to rage, affecting the whole of Greece since yesterday and causing problems in many areas, including Attica, where roads have been flooded.

Meanwhile, the Athens-Corinth National Road has been opened to traffic heading towards Corinth.

According to the Special Bulletin on Dangerous Weather Phenomena (EDEKF) issued by the National Meteorological Service, heavy rain and storms affecting most areas of the east and south of the country will continue until the early hours of Saturday (06-12-2025), while today the phenomena will be intermittently strong and potentially dangerous in the regional units of Pieria – Imathia – Pella – Chalkidiki – Thessaloniki – Kilkis, in Thessaly, in the Sporades, in Attica until the early hours of the morning, in Euboea until noon, in the Cyclades and Crete until noon, in the islands of the Eastern Aegean and in the Dodecanese.

The bad weather is also hitting Attica hard. Serious problems are being reported in many areas of the basin.

Since yesterday afternoon, there has been heavy rainfall, which continued throughout the night, causing flooding in Mandra, Nea Peramos, and Megara, while there are numerous problems on the Attica road network, with many vehicles immobilized on the roads. According to the Fire Department, the Operations Center has received a total of 331 calls for water pumping, tree cutting, and assistance in the Attica and Peloponnese regions from yesterday until 6 a.m. today.

Specifically:

– In the Attica Region, the Fire Service Operations Center has received 290 calls and so far has carried out 90 water pumpings, 27 tree cuttings, and 12 transports of people to safe locations.

– In the Peloponnese region, 41 calls have been received and so far 11 water pumpings, 8 tree cuttings, and 19 transports of people to safe locations have been carried out.

As reported by the Fire Department in recent hours, most calls concern areas of Western Attica (Mandra, Nea Peramos, Megara) in the municipality of Acharnes, while yesterday problems were reported in Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Piraeus, the southern suburbs, and the municipality of Athens.

Messages via 112 were sent in the early hours of the morning to residents in Mandra and Megara, urging them to leave basements and ground floors of buildings and move to higher floors due to the developing flood situation.

Successive messages via 112 were sent yesterday morning to many other areas of the country: Eastern Mani, Evrotas, Pieria, Attica, Central Macedonia, Magnesia, Larissa, Sporades, Euboea, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, Dodecanese, Crete, and the Cyclades. They warned of severe weather conditions and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. After midnight, a message was also sent to residents of Pylos, urging them to limit their travel to only what was absolutely necessary.

Due to the accumulation of water from heavy rainfall, roads in Attica were closed, including major highways.

The latest traffic arrangements in Attica due to bad weather caused by Storm Byron

According to the latest update from the Hellenic Police, due to the severe weather conditions caused by Storm Byron, the following roads in Attica remain closed:

1) Provincial road Alepochori – Schinos from the height of the Durako stream to the height of Mavrolimni.

2) Agia Aikaterini Street from the height of Agia Aikaterini stream and on both streams in the Mandra area

3) Imerou Pefkou Street from the height of Marathonos Avenue in both directions in the Spata area.

4) L. Demokratias from the intersection with Aktis Ionia Street to Gr. Lambraki Street, traffic flow towards Perama in the Keratsini area

5) Lambraki Avenue from Schisto Avenue to Bali Street in the Keratsini area

6) Regional Aigaleo from the height of Athens Avenue to Attiki Odos

7) 28th October Street from the intersection with Thomas Georgiadou Street to Meg. Alexandrou Street in the Nea Peramos area

8) Athens-Lamia National Road at the Metamorfosi exit in the lane heading towards Metamorfosi

9) Northbound lane of the old Athens-Corinth national road from km 38 to km 34 in the Neraki Nea Peramos area in both directions

10) Anonymous street behind the Elefsina refineries, from the height of Athinon Avenue in the direction of traffic towards the Aigaleo Ring Road.

On the contrary, traffic has been restored on the following roads:

1) Vouliagmenis Avenue from Anthion Street to A. Papandreou Street in the Glyfada area

2) Athens Avenue from the exit to the intersection with Schisto-Skaramanga Avenue

3) Dervenochoriou Street from the height of Genimatas Avenue, traffic flow towards Dervenochoria

4) Magoula exit on Attiki Odos

Finally, on the new Athens-Corinth national highway from the Elefsina toll booths to the Nea Peramos exit, in the direction of Corinth, vehicles are only allowed to travel in the left lane.

At 12:00 noon, the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee is expected to meet again to evaluate the data available so far and the ongoing bad weather.

The Fire Department remains on alert, while the Armed Forces and all security forces, the Regional Civil Protection Mechanism, the Forestry Service, HEDNO, ADMIE, EKAV, and motorway concessionaires are on high alert. The relevant services of the Ministries of Health, Infrastructure and Transport, Environment and Energy, Labor and Social Security, Culture, and Rural Development and Food are also on high alert.

Furthermore, following the conclusion of an interministerial coordination meeting held yesterday, the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Yannis Kefalogiannis, spoke of «two days of severe weather» and called for increased vigilance from everyone.
