A 32-year-old man from Syria arrested after episodic pursuit as he was illegally transporting four Egyptians immigrants, while his minor child was also in the vehicle.
The 32-year-old, who was arrested in the Industrial Area of Lamia following an operation involving police officers from the Central Macedonia, Larissa, Magnesia, and Fthiotida Prefectures, is accused of illegally transporting undocumented foreigners., dangerous driving, distinguished wear and tear and disobedience.
It all started when, passing through Aeginio tolls and, realizing that he was about to be checked by OPKE police officers, he sped up in order to escape and then disembarked in two different areas of Pieria the four Egyptians, who lacked legal travel documents.
Following a coordinated police operation, both he and the four immigrants (one 34-year-old, two 16-year-olds, and one 15-year-old) were arrested, while the 32-year-old's minor child was placed under protective custody.
It should be noted that until the vehicle was immobilized, the driver did not comply following the instructions of the police officers and in his attempt to escape collided with a vehicle that moved in same direction causing material damage.
Also caused damage on protective bars at five toll stations on the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road, and was injured when the vehicle crashed. He was later taken to a hospital in Pieria, where he is being treated under guard, while the vehicle he was driving was confiscated.
The investigation revealed that the foreigners traveling in the vehicle had entered the country through an illegal border crossing. Greek-Albanian border and for their transport, they will paid total monetary amount of 3000 euros.
The Pieria Immigration Management Department is conducting a preliminary investigation into the case. The case file was submitted to the Katerini Public Prosecutor, who referred the case to the Katerini Investigating Magistrate.
