On the remote island of Antikythera, hidden between Crete and Kythera, an important archaeological monument, the sanctuary of Apollo Aegileus, is emerging. Excavations in recent years have revealed the site of the temple and its altar, providing valuable information about the history of the island.
From the late classical period until the first century BC, this sanctuary was a hub of civilization, connecting the inhabitants with Apollo, in a particular form as the god of the sea and war. Its links with Crete and its association with piracy, typical of the period, make the sanctuary unique on the historical and cultural map of the Mediterranean.
