A few hours before the crucial parliamentary session on the establishment of a preliminary investigation committee into the Tembi tragedy, Maria Karistianou sent a powerful and clear message to the political system. In a post on social media, the well-known campaigner for the clarification of the case calls on MPs to rise to the occasion.
«Tomorrow is a big day for justice and democracy,» she notes, adding that «words and promises must finally give way to action.» Addressing the representatives of parliament, she calls on them to «reflect on their ethics and values» and decide whether to stand «in the light of truth or in the darkness of concealment.».
Karystianou openly criticizes the government apparatus, referring to «a guilty secret» and a «huge cover-up» that attempts to silence what really happened. In closing, she calls on MPs «to work together for what is just, moral, and right—for the light that society as a whole is demanding» and not to stand in the way of «a comprehensive and thorough investigation and punishment.».
Karystianou's intervention adds to the growing pressure on the political system, at a time when the victims' families and public opinion are demanding answers and justice.
