The island of Kythera has been abandoned to its fate. Continuous power cuts, permanent damage to the water supply network, and total lack of response from those responsible. The inhabitants of the island have reached their limits, expressing anger and ironic comments on social media for a situation that should have been dealt with long ago. The record of the last few days is revealing. A special place in the news was occupied by the highlighting of events by radio station AdelinFM. But let's see what has happened, is happening and will happen as it seems.
The Society cries out
Panagiotis Magoulas describes the situation as “our passing”, while others, such as George Politis, ironically commenting that “the odd thing would be to have electricity”. For days now, Kythera has been living to the rhythm of collapse of basic infrastructure. What about the local leadership?; Silent and indifferent.
Chaos in the water supply and leaks everywhere
The situation with the water is also desperate. From the Caves to Katsoulianika, the water leaks continue unchecked and the reaction from those responsible is zero. Residents, such as the Despina Moomouri and Marie Helene Sammut, denounce leaks that have remained unresolved for months, depriving entire villages of the precious commodity of water supply.
The island is also collapsing in communications
Even communications are problematic. In the Caves, the residents they've had no water for days, no internet, no phone. The isolation is complete, and those in charge continue to be indifferent, leaving the Kytherians in complete disconnection from the rest of the world.
This desperate situation is not an “unfortunate incident” but the result of total inaction and inefficiency on the part of local authorities and those responsible. Citizens are now outraged, as well as feel abandoned in a place where the infrastructure has been left to its fate and no one takes no responsibility.
Immediate action is needed
Η Local Government must immediately take over the Responsibility for the serious infrastructure problems, instead of referring the matter to other authorities ή avoid maintenance and repair costs. Because we are learning, and let them contradict us, that no new work on the networks is being paid for.
The delay, the lack of planning and the negligence in infrastructure maintenance is unfair to residents and makes their daily lives worse. Local government must move forward with immediate, sustainable solutions, prioritising key issues and actively demonstrating its interest in the community.
