An official visit, which marks the resumption of relations between Greece and Libya, will take place today, Tuesday, 06/04, in the neighbouring country, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who will be accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias.
«Libya is taking the first steps towards the restoration of normality and Greece will do everything it can to support it. A prerequisite for regularity, is to withdraw all foreign troops and mercenaries. In a normal Libya, the Turkish-Turkish memorandum, which fantasises about sharing sea lives, cannot be valid», said Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias from Belgrade, where he visited yesterday.
In the same vein, the government spokesperson, Aristotelia Peloni, noted at yesterday's briefing of political editors that «Greece supports the new government and is ready to support its effort to lead the country to credible and inclusive elections, and consequently to political normality and reconstruction». Asked about this, Peloni confirmed that during his meetings in Libya, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will raise the issue of the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum with his interlocutors.
In this regard, he stated that «it is important for Libya in this new era to get rid of the weights that are dragging it down, such as the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries on its territory. But also from texts that are both unsubstantiated and violate international law», noting that Greece is ready to support Libya and the Libyans in all ways, both bilaterally and in the European context.
In Athens there is a firm belief that the reopening of the Greek Embassy in Tripoli, as well as the re-establishment of the Consulate General in Benghazi will contribute significantly to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in all sectors, especially in energy, construction and security with significant prospects for economic and trade relations.
According to the official programme, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the Prime Minister of the Transitional Government of National Unity of Libya (GNU), Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh (Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh) at 15:25 local time (16:25 Greek time). At the same time, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will have a meeting with his counterpart Najla al-Mangoush (Najla al-Mangoush).
This will be followed by extended talks between the delegations and then the two leaders will make statements to the press. At 17:00 local time (18:00 Greek time), Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi, followed by expanded talks.
The visit of the Greek Prime Minister will conclude with a visit to the Greek Embassy in Libya.
