«Forgotten» at the pier of Kapsali since Sunday morning, October 2, when the boat carrying them ran aground in Kythira, they remain 47 Afghan irregular migrants.
There are 11 families, with 13 children and 2 infants, who are “hosted” in the pier shed and have been recorded by the authorities on Monday, October 3.
However, although according to information they were expected to be transferred off the island on the evening of the same day (October 3), we reached the fifth day of their stay in Kythira without knowing exactly when they would leave. The worst thing is that these people have been sleeping outdoors for four nights, next to the waves. And while we can assume that the adults will be protected to some extent by their clothing, who can say the same for the children, especially the two infants? As a volunteer from the Kythira Solidarity Group pointed out, there is a risk that the infants «will end up sleeping in the hospital on the fifth day.».
The problem is clear. Kythira does not have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate, feed, and care for a large number of asylum seekers over a long period of time. In fact, indicative that all these days, it was mainly thanks to the personal expenses of volunteers and the assistance of the few restaurants in the Kapsali area that have remained open that the migrants-refugees were able to live in dignity.
