Kythera High School: seeking the «Whole Self» through an experiential workshop on relationships

At a time when human relationships are constantly being redefined, the Kythira High School takes an excellent initiative, focusing on the delicate world of adolescence. Through the Skills Workshop, the students of our island were invited to «dive» into the deep waters of self-awareness, seeking balance between themselves and others.

The experiential workshop, which was recently implemented, used Plato's philosophy and Shel Silverstein's contemporary literature as vehicles to promote the concept of personal fulfillment. It is an activity that transcends the narrow confines of the curriculum, offering our young people the tools to build healthy relationships based on autonomy and respect.

Here is the detailed announcement of the Kythera High School for the action:

Relationships in adolescence: From the myth of the other half to the concept of the whole self

In the framework of the implementation of innovative lessons and during the Skills Workshop, an experiential workshop was held in order to enhance students' self-awareness and critical thinking about relationships in adolescence.

The action started with the narration of the myth of the «other half» from Plato's Symposium, in order to explore the idea of the completion and the search for the «other half» as a cultural narrative about love. This was followed by a discussion and a short experiential collaboration exercise for students to reflect on the concepts of proximity, dependence and autonomy.

Next, excerpts from the book The Missing Piece Meets the Big O by Shel Silverstein were used as a stimulus for the discussion around the notion of wholeness, personal development and relationship as meeting rather than completing.

The workshop concluded with a creative activity of artistic expression, during which the students symbolically depicted themselves through geometric shapes and colours. Through the presentation and reflection of their works, issues of self-image, boundaries, emotional maturity and ways of connecting with the other emerged. The activity was planned and coordinated by the school's psychologist Mrs. Konstantina Kalliri with the support of the school's director Mrs. Stavroula Facea.
