Sneezing: Why we shouldn't «stifle» it»

How many times have we had to sneeze indoors and - especially in covid season - «choke it down»? But this is something that shouldn't happen.

Sneezing is a process of the body that scientists say should not be suppressed and should be done freely. Sneezing or sneezing is a semi-autonomous, spasmodic expulsion of air from the lungs through the nose and mouth, usually caused by foreign particles irritating the nasal cavity.

A sneeze forcibly expels air from the mouth and nose in an explosive, involuntary action resulting mainly from irritation of the nasal mucous membrane.

The body sneezes to remove mucus containing foreign particles to clear the nasal cavity. During sneezing, the palate presses against the back of the tongue and lifts up to partially close the mouth opening so that air expelled from the lungs can be removed through the nose. Because the mouth is partially closed, a quantity of this air usually leaves the mouth as well.

Sneezing cannot occur during sleep because of REM atonia - a physical state where motor neurons are not stimulated and reflex signals are not transmitted to the brain.

It is not the same for everyone

This exciting reaction of our organism is not the same in all organisms. Some sneeze once and loudly, some sneeze a few times and gently, some sneeze several times continuously. But in all organisations the following happens.

Eyes. Our eyes close reflexively when we sneeze. No human being can sneeze with his eyes open.

Heart. During sneezing our heart does not stop, but there is a slight slowing down of the heartbeat. Most people do not feel any change.

Speed. The process that our body does, that is, when within a fraction of a second the chest muscles press the lungs, the throat closes so that the exit is through the nose, the air is forced out with pressure and speed. The speed of a sneeze reaches up to 160 kilometers per hour. That is, it is like a small hurricane coming out of us.

Reasons that cause it

There are many reasons that can cause a sneeze. Allergens, nasal irritants, viruses and colds, and rarely an injury to the nose, or sudden inhalation of cold air, can cause it.

Never «choke» it»

When it comes to sneeze, we have to do it exactly as it comes out. We have to put a handkerchief in front of us, of course, because thousands of germs are ejected, but under no circumstances should we suppress it.

-Can be destroy our ear. Yes, you read that right. We can even get a ruptured eardrum, since when we hold back the sneeze the compressed air is pushed back through the eustachian tube of the middle ear. What does this mean? Hearing loss, hearing loss, even vertigo.

-Can be traumatize our diaphragm.

-Can be get rupture of blood vessels in the eyes;.

-Can be get rupture or weakening of the blood vessels in our brain.
