The mountainous area of Gerania was burned by the fire that broke out on Wednesday, 19/05, at 21:45, in the area of Schinos, Corinthia. In the area, winds of westerly intensity, 5-6 Beaufort, are blowing, which led the fire to the mountain, according to a spokesman for the Fire Department.
Speaking to «Hora Hellas», on OPEN, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis said that «a short while ago, a preventive order evacuation and in Aleppo mainly in the southern and western part of the settlement» and asked to comment on why 112 did not work he clarified that it was a central decision not to cause panic and because the situation was completely manageable in terms of evacuation orders given during the night in 6 settlements and two monasteries.
Shortly after midnight, the authorities proceeded with the preventive evacuation of the settlements Schinos and Agia Sotira, while according to the Fire Brigade, during the night the settlements were evacuated Cotton and Black Lake and then for precautionary reasons, the monasteries of St. John of Long Island and Agia Paraskevi, as well as the settlements, Mass and Friday, because the fire front was moving east and crossing the Gerania Ori.
The work of extinguishing the fire is coordinated by the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouris, while water-borne vehicles of the local government and volunteer firefighters assist.
As regards damage from the fire, there are, according to the Fire Brigade, isolated and scattered reports, but no official record has been made. Residents, however, but also the presidents of the communities and various bodies in the area are already talking about several Burned houses.
In the meantime, the firefighting forces have been further strengthened and 182 firefighters with 62 vehicles, seven hiking sections and the motorized special section are operating in the battle with the flames, while dozens of aerial firefighting resources consisting of planes and helicopters are carrying out water drops.
