Ο lighthouse, a symbol of light, guidance and hope, is deeply rooted in the childhood memories of Costas Koronaiou. With this nostalgic starting point, the renowned photographer presents the exhibition “Our Lighthouse”, which opens its doors on Monday 26 August 2024 at 10 am, at the Castle of Chora of Kythera.
This photographic exhibition honours the lighthouse of Moudari, which stood as the only reference point of light from dusk to dawn, at a time when electricity had not yet reached Kythera. In the eyes of the then young Koronaeus, the lighthouse was not just a building; it was the source of magic and inspiration as he watched its rays travel through the windows of his house in Karavas. Its rays carried his imagination to distant horizons, where ship captains were guided by this luminous spot through the narrow passages of the Sea of Kythera.
This exhibition is the culmination of decades of love of Koroneos for the lighthouse of Moudari, a place full of memories and emotional charge. The photographer presents through his works all aspects of the lighthouse, from its austere and majestic appearance on the sunniest days to the most dramatic weather conditions surrounding it. Through his lens, Koroneos highlights the timeless charm of the lighthouse, creating images that express not only the beauty of the landscape, but also the deep relationship he has developed with this unique monument.
The exhibition is organized jointly by the General State Archives - Kythera Department and the Kythera Foundation for Culture & Development (KIPA), and will be open to the public at the Castle of Chora from Monday to Friday, 09:00-13:00. This is an opportunity to travel through history, nature and the human connection with light and the sea, through the eyes of a Kytherian who has lived and breathed the heritage of the area.
