The establishment and operation of Municipal Slaughterhouses in Kythera is a much desired project of developmental dimension which was perhaps for the first time formulated and became an official demand in the popular assemblies organized by the District during the first term of PASOK in government, in the 80s. It was then that the Prefect of Kythera, Grigoris Stergioulis, was promoting the PASOK agenda for productive reconstruction and development of the countryside. Four whole decades passed, numerous governments, prefectural, municipal and communal authorities, but the work never happened. As has been recorded in society, there were long-standing interests opposing the establishment of slaughterhouses in Kythera, while local authorities, faced with the political costs, «buried» the project in a discriminatory manner. For those who remember or keep a record of political statements, the project was always a promise in elections, or an announcement in some of the visits of political figures holding government or other administrative office.
The presence of the Vice-Regional Governor Mrs. Theodorakopoulou - Bogris on the island the day after tomorrow for the signing of the contract of the project «Establishment of Municipal Slaughterhouses of Kythera» which will be funded by the technical assistance programme of the Attica Regional Development Programme is a pleasant and optimistic news. At last, a project of breath and substantial support for the primary sector is taking its way, with the hope that it will be completed and become a tool for the island's rural population.
For what has happened and is happening, it should be noted that the starting point was set in April 2017 by the mayor of Kythera, Mr.Efst. Harhalakis when he invited the productive class of the island to an open briefing and consultation at the Cultural Centre of Kythera River on this issue and more specifically in the context of the feasibility study that he had ordered to the private consultant Mr. Grasso. This was followed by the process of mapping the actual existing situation of the island's livestock with the participation of the farmers and things went from there.
Credit for this truly positive development should go to the mayor of Kythera, who believed that he could achieve results. From now on, both the progress of the project and the preparation of the administration and the farmers to use and operate the new productive structure of the island that will be handed over should be monitored.
