Kythera, 23 July 2025 - New evidence emerges from the journalistic report on the incident that occurred on Tuesday 22 July with the flight Olympic Air's OA042, which operated the Athens - Kythera route with an aircraft of type ATR 72-600.
More specifically:
During the descent to the airport «Alexander Onassis», was presented technical failure in the left engine of the aircraft. The commander applied the prescribed procedures and successfully completed landing with one engine, while the passengers were evacuated in haste, as defined in the respective security protocols.
According to reports, upon landing with one engine the aircraft's braking system was overloaded, given the difficulties, which is addressed in the technical checks that follow.

According to Kythera.News, Olympic Air's technical crew arrived on Tuesday afternoon, for the purpose of inspecting the aircraft. However, immediate intervention was not possible, as in the case of incidents related to flight safety, priority shall be given to the investigation by the relevant National Agency (EODASAM).
In response to a question from the Kythera.News to the Agency, we received the following official reply:
«EODASAM has already been informed by the company about the incident in question and has taken the necessary steps to conduct an investigation.». In fact, a team of the organisation is expected in Kythera.
Meanwhile, according to Kythera.News sources, in the next few days, the Governor and the Deputy Governor of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are expected to visit Kythera State Airport, with the aim of gaining a full picture of the situation and controlling the airport's infrastructure and operations.
The visits of the competent team of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, the authority responsible for the operation of Kythera airport, may also be linked to the overall assessment of issues concerning the airport. What preceded it:
On 16 June 2025, the Mayor of Kythira Efstratios Charhalakis sent an urgent letter to the competent authorities, concerning the image of abandonment and the potential risks to which visitors may be exposed. He referred to “rusty trolleys, a flag at the point of offence and images that offend our Country”
Recently there have been reports concerning the cleaning of the airport's surroundings with «shots» against the Y.P.A. with references for «clear responsibilities», excluding the executives of the airport of Kythera.
The Kythera.News will monitor developments and will come back with news when there is an official update from the CAA or EODASAM.
