A strong earthquake occurred at 10:36 on Thursday morning, 08/09, in the sea area between Zakynthos and Kefalonia, according to the revised assessment of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. The initial estimate was for a tremor of 5.3 on the Richter scale.
The epicentre of the earthquake is located 57 km southwest of Lixouri, at a focal depth of 10 km.

«Despite the fact that it was strongly felt in the Peloponnese and western Greece, we have no problem. It is an earthquake-generating area and it is far from a populated area. We estimate that it belongs to the current seismicity,» Efthimios Lekkas told ERT a short while ago.
The Euro-Mediterranean Institute (EMSC) recorded the earthquake at 5.2 Richter.
