An alarm was raised at about 5:30 in the afternoon at the Areos Pedion where arson was attempted twice.
After complaints from bystanders and passers-by, a suspicious woman was arrested and is being questioned at the Kypseli Police Station.
The fires were brought under control as District officials intervened immediately with a small fire truck which has been allocated and was on standby. A fire department vehicle also contributed significantly to the suppression efforts.
The Regional Governor G. Patoulis was immediately informed by the Director of Parks and Alsace and responsible for the Field of Mars Ε. Kokmoto, from whom he asked for increased vigilance.
On the occasion of this incident, C. Patoulis said: «It is particularly worrying that a fire was attempted in the heart of Athens, in our park. We must all be vigilant and report any suspicious move. I would like to thank the fire brigade and the Region of Attica, who intervened immediately and the fire was brought under control before it took on dimensions».
