The residents of northern Evia are experiencing shocking moments in the last 24 hours. These people, who within minutes saw their houses burn, who were asked to abandon their belongings and their lives, who found themselves without food and clothing from one moment to the next, are determined to do everything in their power to save their region.
Among the shocking images we have been watching in recent hours of people forming chains to fall in the unequal battle with the flames, others of animals that managed to come out of hell alive, from exhausted firefighters resting on the road to continue their struggle, elderly women crying, we witnessed a heartbreaking moment between reporter Eulabia Revis and an elderly resident of the village of Galatsona, located on the outskirts of Istria.
The OPEN journalist who, along with her colleagues, has been recording the developments in the fire fronts around the clock and giving a voice to the residents who want to express their despair, grief and anger, spoke on air with the man, whom she advised to leave the area as he seems to be facing respiratory problems.
“And go where? I am afraid. Not for myself, I'm afraid for my house,” replies the elderly man, whose voice comes out with difficulty.
Then we witness a perfectly human and yet shocking moment. A journalist and a villager embrace each other and burst into tears.
With them and us...
