After several days of coastal isolation and constant pressure from local authorities and residents, it seems that Kythira and Antikythira regain their maritime connection with mainland Greece.
According to information from Mayor of Kythira, Efstratios Charhalakis, after contacting Secretary General of the Ministry of Shipping and President of the Coastal Transport Council (SAS), Mr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos, as well as executives of Directorate of Maritime Transport, the company Levante Ferries undertakes line coverage.
The ship that will most likely operate the routes is the E/G-O/G KEFALONIA, which will be undertaken by exactly the route of the Aqua Jewel, which had suddenly suspended its services, leaving the island without any ferry connections.
The official announcement from the shipowner is expected soon, so that the detailed schedule of routes and details about agency fees and tickets.
The goal is the first route to start on Tuesday from Piraeus, restoring the main transport link between Kythira and Antikythira and the mainland.
The mayor's statement follows:
Dear fellow citizens,
I would like to inform you that, as I have just been assured by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Shipping and President of the SAS, Mr. Ev. Kyriazopoulos, as well as the executives of the Maritime Transport Directorate, LEVANTE FERRIES will cover the Kythira/Antikythira coastal routes, most likely with the E/G-O/G KEFALONIA.
The ship will follow the Aqua Jewel's itinerary exactly, but there will be an official announcement from the shipowner with the detailed schedule and the ship's agency.
The goal is for the first route to start next Tuesday from Piraeus.
I would like to express my special thanks to the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Member of Parliament for Piraeus and the Islands, Mr. Kostas Katsafados, who, in constant communication with the political leadership of the Ministry of Shipping, contributed to finding a solution, as well as Member of Parliament Mr. Nikolaos Vlachakos, who also showed interest by submitting a relevant report to the Minister.
The SAS meeting, where I represent KEDE as a regular member, continues with important items on the agenda.
